Manufacturing Process
The manufacturing of nickel alloy turbine blades involves several sophisticated steps:
Investment Casting: The most common method, where a wax pattern of the blade is coated with a ceramic shell, which is then removed after the metal is poured and solidified.
Directional Solidification (DS) and Single Crystal (SC) Techniques: These advanced casting techniques align the grain structure of the metal, resulting in blades with superior mechanical properties and longer life spans. SC blades, in particular, have no grain boundaries, significantly reducing the likelihood of creep and fatigue.
Coating
To further protect against high temperatures and oxidation, turbine blades often receive a thermal barrier coating (TBC), typically composed of ceramic materials. These coatings can include:
Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ): A common TBC material that provides excellent thermal insulation.
Bond Coats: Intermediate layers that improve the adhesion of the TBC to the metal substrate and protect against oxidation.
