Manufacturing Process
The production of Incoloy turbine blades involves several advanced manufacturing techniques:
Investment Casting: A common method where a wax pattern of the blade is created and coated with a ceramic shell. The wax is melted away, and molten Incoloy is poured into the mold.
Directional Solidification (DS) and Single Crystal (SC) Techniques: These processes align the grain structure of the metal, resulting in blades with superior mechanical properties and longer life spans. SC blades have no grain boundaries, significantly reducing the likelihood of creep and fatigue.
Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP): Used to eliminate porosity in the castings, improving the mechanical properties and integrity of the blades.
Coating
Incoloy turbine blades often receive a protective coating to further enhance their performance:
Thermal Barrier Coatings (TBCs): Typically made from ceramic materials like yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), these coatings provide thermal insulation and protect against high temperatures.
Bond Coats: Applied between the substrate and TBC, these coatings improve adhesion and protect against oxidation.
