Stellite Material Product
Stellite alloys are a group of cobalt-chromium "superalloys" consisting of complex carbides in an alloy matrix, designed primarily for high wear resistance and excellent chemical and corrosion performance in harsh environments. The combination of cobalt and chromium also produces an extremely high melting point, making them well suited for a range of interesting applications from extreme cutting tools to hot section alloy coatings in gas turbines. They may also contain molybdenum or tungsten and small amounts of carbon to provide better performance for specific applications.
The Stellite family of alloys was originally developed by Elwood Haynes in the early 1900s as a replacement for tableware that easily stains. Stellite is a trade name for the Deloro Stellite Company, now part of the Kennametal Group.
Stellite alloys are non-magnetic, generally highly corrosion resistant, and like many alloys they are adaptable and can be refined for a range of specific applications. Due to their extremely hard material properties, Stellite alloys are inherently difficult and generally expensive to machine, so some very precise casting and grinding methods are often used.
The carbides present in the Co-Cr-W based Stellite alloys are of the chromium rich M 7 C 3 type. The Stellite trademark owner claims that Stellite 6 is the most widely used of its Stellite alloy family, providing a proven industry standard for general wear resistance as well as high mechanical and chemical properties in harsh environments.
