Turbocharger Turbine Wheel Design

Turbocharger turbine wheels are typically made from high-strength materials such as Inconel or titanium alloys. These materials are chosen for their excellent heat resistance, high temperature strength, and resistance to corrosion.

The turbine wheel is designed with carefully engineered blades that are aerodynamically shaped to efficiently harness the energy of the exhaust gas flow. The blades are angled and curved to maximize the transfer of energy from the exhaust gas to the turbine wheel.

The turbine wheel spins at very high speeds, often reaching tens of thousands of revolutions per minute (RPM), driven by the energy of the exhaust gas flow. This rotational motion is transmitted to the compressor wheel on the opposite end of the turbocharger shaft.

As the exhaust gas flows over the turbine blades, it causes the turbine wheel to rotate. This rotational motion is used to drive the compressor wheel, which is connected to the same shaft as the turbine wheel. The compressor wheel compresses incoming air, increasing its pressure and density before it enters the engine's intake manifold.
